PROTECT Accounts

Who needs one and how to request PROTECT access

Principal Investigators

  • PIs always need an account:  
    • Principal Investigators always need an account as they are responsible for the conduct of the study and need access to view, edit, or perform actions on their study submissions.
    • This applies to NIH PIs as well as Non-NIH (participating site) PIs.  

Study Team Members

  • Study team members usually (but not always) need an account:
    • ONLY Study Team Members who need to login to PROTECT to view, edit, or perform actions on submissions need to have an account.  
    • Study Team Members who do NOT need to log into PROTECT to view, edit, or perform actions on a submission do NOT need an account to be added to the study team section of the application (as long as they are active in NED).    

All Other Users

  • All other users who need to login to PROTECT to view, edit, or perform actions on submissions will need to have a PROTECT account:
    • Examples of other types of system users could be Guests, Committee Staff, Committee Reviewers, Ancillary Reviewers, SRC Staff, IRB Members, IRB Reviewers, DEC Reviewers, etc.

New NIH User Accounts

If you are an NIH user who needs to login to PROTECT to view submissions or work in the system, get started here to request an account and receive the in-person training from one of our trainers. You can also submit this request for someone else.

NOTE:

  • ONLY users who need to login to PROTECT to view, edit, or perform actions on submissions need to have a PROTECT account.  
  • Study team members who are engaged in the research, but will never login to PROTECT to view or work on submissions, do NOT need a PROTECT account to be added to the study team section of your IRB application.

New Non-NIH User (External) Accounts

If you have a non-NIH user (external user, participating site user) who needs to login to PROTECT to view submissions or work in the system, get started here to request an account and receive in-person training for them from one of our trainers. An NIH employee will need to create the ticket on their behalf of the Non-NIH User.

IMPORTANT: What to include in your ticket request:

  • Some upcoming times when we can train your user on their system tasks in a brief 20-30 min virtual call.
